I would like to express my gratitude at first to our hosts, the authorities of the Ministry of Culture of the People´s Republic of China and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Thank you to make this program and visit a possible horizon for all of us. I am glad to share it with all of you, visiting colleagues from all around the world. My name is Verónica Flores and it is an honor for me to be here on behalf of the University of Buenos Aires from Argentina.
In principle, I could say that ´The story of China and me´ is like the story of a fisherman and a river, a close relationship, carefully built through the past two decades and I hope, with a long way off. Recalling the begginings of this lasting bond, I can recognize the marvellous discovery of the language as a path to reach the vastness of Chinese culture. In this sense, learning Chinese was the first challenge to get close to know the long history of this ancient civilization as well as the living culture of the present. I began studying traditional Chinese characters at one of the few local institutions of taiwanese diaspora in my country and much later, I continued with the simplified characters, but not for that reason less difficult to learn and memorize.
The effort to learn a language so different was worth it. Through the deep and subtle meaning contained in Chinese characters, I could approach to the knowledge of its long social, cultural and political history. I was fascinated then, as a historian, by the balance in the sense of permanence and change during the past as much as by the impressive and dynamic transformation ocurred in China since the early twentieth century to the present. Even though in my country it was a rareness, I devoted myself to study - from distance but insistently- social modern and contemporary Chinese history.
Time passed and I finally visited China for the first time. I traveled around Beijing, Xi´an, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou, being impossible not to marvel at the geographical diversity and multiplicity of cultural treasures I found in each of these landscapes. The river was so generous with the patient fisherman. I brought with me many textual sources from those trips. Through the study of texts, I came to the richness of chinese visual culture, which became a second source of endless discovery and learning about China.
Since then I came across with beautiful sources of old and new works of art. At the beginning I was mostly interested in searching out the secrets behind traditional paintings, old masters and their techniques and ideas about art. The reflection on the past and the sense of modernity in visual arts made me think about the origins of modern chinese art. This concern led me to research on modern woodcut and its relantionship with Lu Xun´s ideas about modern chinese literature and art. That was the topic of my MA Dissertation and was the background for my ongoing doctoral research, related to aesthetics and social reflexions about Chinese modernity in the field of art during the early twentieth century.
Behind this story, of course, there were numerous people, friends and institutions in China and in my own country who supported my projects, estimuled my interests and helped me to find the proper ways to follow and achieve my academic and personal goals. I am deeply gratefull to all of them. A new step in my relationship with China, this vast and wonderful river, starts now.
