High official Dong Zhuo has seized power at court, bringing great misfortune to the people and disaster to the country. He is passionately hated by commoners and officials alike, but his power is so great that no one dares to move against him. Ambitious minister Cao Cao unsuccessfully attempts to assassinate Dong Zhuo, and an order is put out for his arrest. He flees, but when he reaches the county seat he is captured by the local officials. County official Chen Gong interrogates Cao Cao, and is deeply impressed by his fearless attempt to rid the country of the evil sycophant Dong Zhuo. Under Cao Cao's urging, Chen Gong decides to renounce his official post and join him in roaming the country, attempting to improve the people's lot.
On their way out of the city, the two encounter Cao Cao's father's good friend Lu Boshe. The old gentleman is delighted to see them, and warmly welcomes them into his home. Wanting to give his guests nothing but the best, Lu Boshe instructs his servants to kill a pig and sheep, and personally goes out to buy some wine. While Cao Cao is waiting with Chen Gong for Lu Boshe to return, he suddenly hears the sound of knives being sharpened. Mistrustfully thinking that the Lu family is plotting to murder him, Cao Cao sets about with his sword, indiscriminately cutting down everyone in the house. In moments, more than a dozen members of Lu Boshe's household lie dead on the ground. Chen Gong, deeply shaken by Cao Cao's actions, has no idea of how to react. He goes into the kitchen where he sees the bound pig and sheep. Realizing the knives were meant for them, he reviles Cao Cao for mistaking Lu Boshe's good intentions, and killing so many innocent people. Cao Cao hurriedly pulls Chen Gong out the door, and they jump on their horses and flee.
Cao Cao and Cheng Gong haven't gone far when they meet Lu Boshe on his way home with the wine. The old man tries to convince them to stay, but Cao Cao is adamant that he must depart. Chen Gong, afraid that Cao Cao will explode into violence once more, hastily urges Lu Boshe to return home. But before the old man gets very far, Cao Cao reconsiders, and turning his horse, goes galloping back and stabs his father's good friend to death. Chen Gong looks at the old man lying in a pool of blood, and demands of Cao Cao how he could be so cruel. Cao Cao bluntly replies that Lu Boshe might have sought revenge for his family, so it was best to eliminate him in order to avoid future trouble.
Late that night, Cao Cao's sleep is deep and untroubled, but Chen Gong cannot stop tossing and turning. He realizes that although Cao Cao may have a hero's determination, he is also excessively paranoid, crafty, and cruel. Determined to no longer associate with such a person, Chen Gong stealthily leaves Cao Cao's side.
