Origin:Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) novel, Romance of the Yang Family GeneralsTime:Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) during the reign of Emperor Song Renzong (1023-1063 AD) Place:Northern ChinaMain characters:She Taijun (widow of a Song general)Mu Guiying (wife of She Taijun's grandson)
The Western Xia regime (1038-1227 AD) has been making forays on China's northern borderlands for many years. Over the generations, more than a dozen generals and commanders of the Yang family have sacrificed themselves in defense of the lands of the Song Dynasty. She Taijun, the matriarch of the Yang family, is over one hundred years old, vigorous and highly skilled in the martial arts. Her husband and sons have all lost their lives in battle on the border. Every day she tirelessly leads her daughters, daughters-in-law, and great grandchildren in stringent military training.
One day, the Yang home is strung with festive lanterns and colored pennants. She Taijun is celebrating the fiftieth birthday of her beloved only grandson, Yang Zongbao. The feast is just getting underway, when border guard commanders Meng and Jiao come rushing in. Deeply distressed, they report that Yang Zongbao has fallen in battle. In the blink of an eye, cries of grief fill the air, and the banquet hall is transformed into a hall of mourning.
The ministers and officials of the Song court are not in agreement concerning the proper response to the incursions of the Western Xia. Minister Kou Zhun, representing the hawks, and Minister Wang Hui, representing the doves, argue heatedly in front of Emperor Song Renzong. The Emperor, weak and with no opinion of his own, appeals to numerous civil and military officials for advice on how to deal with this threat. But the entire court remains silent. When She Taijun hears about this, she appears in court leading twelve women generals, including her daughters, daughters-in-law, and granddaughter-in-law, and demands to be sent to the front. The Emperor is deeply impressed, and appoints She Taijun as supreme commander of the campaign against the Western Xia.
The Yang family women generals arrive at the border, and in their first engagement utterly rout the defending troops of the Western Xia. Even so, when the King of the Western Xia learns that his opponents are a group of women, he can't stop laughing. He concocts a scheme to lure She Taijun's forces into a mountain valley, and wipe them all out in one blow.
Yang Zongbao's widow, Mu Guiying, risks life and limb to scout the valley. Encountering an old person gathering herbs, she learns the location of a concealed plank path suspended along the cliff. Late at night, like celestial soldiers and immortal generals, the women materialize at the rear of the Western Xia encampment. Catching the enemy unawares, they achieve an extraordinary victory. Raging fire consumes the enemy camp and illuminates the valley. The Yang family women generals exalt in their success, the triumph on their faces reflected in the leaping flames.
