What the Ace says... |
Q: Is your organization affected by the recent outbreak of coronavirus? To what extent?
A: Travel agencies have been significantly impacted by the outbreak in a few ways. First by way of considerable requests for cancelation and refunds. In many cases for airline sales refunds have out weighed sales placing reverse cash flow pressure on airlines and agents alike, second as consumers become very worried about travelling, they have looked to change, cancel, or not book future travel plans and third for Corporate Travel many companies have placed total travel bans or part travel bans resulting in bookings stopping all together. This has meant that many agencies have had to put of staff, reduce hours, force annual leave or make drastic changes to staff arrangements as it is the only cost leaver available to them when a sudden and unexpected or planned downturn occurs which is the case with this outbreak.
Q: According to your optimistic estimate, how long will it take for tourism to fully recover from the negative impact of the outbreak?
A: I believe a full recovery and return to a “normal” status of travel prior to the outbreak will not materialise in the year of 2020. As the virus is brought under control, it will take a full and total clear message before “normal” will return. I believe we will see staggered returns, but we will have a very big job to re build faith in travel to China – this will take significant efforts and will require a global approach.
Q: What do you think is a key point that our industry must pay attention to when it recovers from the crisis?
A: Faith in the information being provided to the travelling public that the virus is eradicated.
Q: What change do you think the outbreak may eventually bring to the tourism industry in the future?
A: An agreed international standard to ensure that reporting is accurate and factual.
Q: Please share with us a story of your organization in dealing with the crisis that others may draw experience from.
