Oil painting originated from Europe and was brought to China at the beginning of the 20th century by Chinese artists who went to Europe to study. Today it has become a popular art form with a variety of styles and formats—an important embodiment of Chinese culture. However, Chinese oil painters are increasingly aware of the critical importance of exploring and conveying Chinese cultural philosophy and viewpoint. This is because China has a continuous artistic tradition boasting a unique system of images and forms. Thus, “imagism oil painting” has become the shared pursuit of many Chinese oil painters. To some extent, the “imagism” here does share commonalities with expressionism of the western genre. It stresses free and unbridled subjective expression, underpinned by the compelling “imagism” tradition in China. Chinese fine arts seek “unity between heaven and man” and harmony between humans and nature. It embodies the artists’ emotions and individuality, and renders “imagism oil painting” a Chinese cultural trait in essence. This time, the eight leading oil painters will showcase a myriad of styles, revealing to us their spiritual world and their affection of life in nature. Their artistic intuition and language tell of powerful minds and poetic aesthetics. Their works are the epitome of oriental culture.
Cultures around the globe clash and converge. They must follow the common trend while discovering creative inspiration in tradition. Marriage of the global and the local gives birth to splendor. This time we open a window to contemporary Chinese fine arts. Through it, Swedish audience can join our bilateral exchanges oriented towards the future.
